I met Steve briefly at a Wizard World in Chicago back in 2001. I bought from him Volume 1 of Whiteout, and he was kind enough to add a head sketch to the mix. He did this in 10 seconds. He made a fan for life.

For the past few months I've been working on a project with writer and director Joseph Sowell, doing storyboards and concept work. You can see some of that work on this blog.

Also I have another webcomic on the works, with my friend Josh Hechinger, writter of that wild beast of a comic called Yon Kuma / Bear Beater Bunyan. The project is called R+M. More on that as it develops, but it's going to be in color.

Desde hace algunos meses he estado colaborando con storyboards y diseños de personaje con Joseph Sowell, escritor y director. Pueden ver algo de ese trabajo por acá. After I saw yesterday progress with detail I noticed that it was lacking the looseness of the previous versions of the sketch.

If you don't have it there, then you don't have it - Alex Toth

Which means, if you don´t have a good initial structure and composition, all the rendering in the world is not going to make your drawing work.

So I went back to the previous version and started vectorizing, using the loose sketch as the template, this way I keep the proportions that I liked first and add the accuracy of vector drawing.

I'll use this vectors to make selections and paint in PS7 (yes! PS7 rulz! and it's light!)

I'm dedicating something like 20 minutes each night to this, so if I go slow that's why.

Why vectors? it's something I'm learning to do properly at my new job, where we have to make lots of drawings on Adobe Illustrator. I'm learning quite a bit.

On other news, Zuda rejected a project I was involved with. Major Bummer (and not the John Arcudi - Doug Mahnke one :p)

Today is my 29th birthday, not saying it to hunt some congrats from you guys and girls, it is more like a statement.

When you are 20, you envision a lot of stuff that you want to do by the time you are 30.
I still don't work for Marvel, or for 2000AD, I still don't own a house or a car, I still don't have enough money to take my nieces to Disneyland, I still don't have an Eisner (:P).

But I keep drawing, everyday, for as long as possible. I'm still with my lovely wife (after 9 years!) and it seems my career is finally launching one step at a time.
The best gift you can give me is to go and download my comic, Bear Beater Bunyan from Itunes and the Android Market, leave a review, click some stars, etc.

And keep visiting this little art corner of the internetz.

I did these in a cheap paper called Estraza, normally used for wrapping food, you can buy 1 kilo for 1 dollar, perfect for practices.
Some figures are from a George Bridgman book some from a Loomis book, some from imagination,

We (me and Josh) just wrapped up Yon Kuma, after more than a year of working on it, and it feels good!

Now for what's next is release the revamped Yon Kuma for mobile devices, draw more comics, make more money and work hard to make 2010 better than 2009.

La Experiencia Paco Roca / The Frank Stone Experience

El pasado 11 y 12 de noviembre asisti al taller de Paco Roca en el Centro Cultural España, que al parecer es el ultimo oasis para los que nos dedicamos a esto del comic. Ya habia asistido a un curso ahi con mi admiradisimo BEF.

Quien es Paco Roca? Clickeé aquí.

El taller fué mas teorico que practico, pero se le aprende mas a un autor cuando habla de su obra y la de otros sin interrupciones.

Puntos importantes:

Paco Roca es un PROFESIONAL, el primer profesional europeo que conozco en persona, alguien que viene de una industria mucho mas boyante que la nuestra en cuestion de comics.

Habló sobre la importancia de la investigacion y las referencias.
"Hay que creerse que estas dentro"

Hablo sobre la fuerza del dibujo para transmitir un mensaje, y que, en el comic, caben TODOS los estilos.

Sobre que a veces las limitaciones de un autor se vuelven sellos personales.

Sobre que en un comic NADA ES CASUAL.

Sobre "Contar la historia que te apetece"

Sobre la adaptabilidad que le dió el trabajar en publicidad.

Vi a un hombre feliz de dedicarse a esto, de ver al comic como un medio para contar cualquier tipo de historia.

Que aunque no le guste dibujar perspectiva se aviente paginas como esta:

Que diferencia con respecto a otros autores.

Paco Roca tiene un apreton de manos vigoroso, dicen que puedes aprender mucho de una persona con un apreton de manos.

Me hizo voltear a ver mis paginas y ver donde y como ando, y sobre todo, a donde quiero llegar.

Una gran experiencia.

I went to a workshop at a local cultural center, the teacher was Paco Roca, award winning author of Arrugas, more info about him here.

It was an eye opening experience.

-He's a PRO.
-He talked about the importance of research. "you have to believe you are INSIDE the story"
-In comics you can do any style and any type of story.
-About taking the time to draw the difficult stuff like perspective. (check that image on top)

It made go back and look at my pages and see that i'm a lazy MF.

finished listening to Jim Dale's reading of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, so i'm done with the series. The finale was a little fan-fictionish but I had a good experience all around.

Heya readers, three quick things:

1) Due to hosting issues with the current site, we’re going to be switching over to http://yonkuma.wordpress.com soon to finish out the series, so change your bookmarks accordingly.

2) When the series is done (and we’re on the last chapter, so it’ll be done before the end of the year), the whole series isn’t going to be online anymore: there’ll be a free PDF of the first chapter on the wordpress site, but the mobile device issues are gonna be the only way to read the series after the end.

3) I have my own sub board over at Beyond The Bleed, and now there’s a Yon Kuma Thread for all y’all to discuss the series and/or chew me out for item two.
